Huntsville is taking its next big step in urban development with a proposed greenway stretching from downtown to Alabama A&M University.
Residents Get First Look at Greenway Plans
Local officials recently unveiled conceptual designs for the north Huntsville greenway during a public presentation. The greenway is intended to enhance connectivity in the city’s north end, offering a scenic, pedestrian-friendly route through Huntsville’s neighborhoods and campuses.
Skybridge Connection Key to the Project
While the project is still in its early stages, planners say a key piece of the puzzle is the completion of the city’s skybridge project. The greenway will eventually link to the existing Meek Greenway and connect directly with the skybridge, creating a continuous route from Alabama A&M to downtown Huntsville—and, in the future, extending all the way to Ditto Landing.
Inspired by Atlanta’s Beltline Vision
Dennis Madsen, Huntsville’s Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning, says the project is modeled in part after Atlanta’s Beltline, which has successfully blended green space development with economic revitalization. “We’re looking at how greenways can serve both the community and the economy,” Madsen explained. “This network will eventually offer a seamless corridor for recreation, commuting, and connection across the city.”
Although no construction timeline has been finalized, city leaders emphasize that progress on the greenway will depend heavily on completing the skybridge first.
