Huntsville sees Nearly $390 million road projects planned across metro area

Recent rain has slowed paving and grading on Interstate 565. However, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) says the $41 million widening project remains on schedule to finish by fall 2025, AL.com reports.

Meanwhile, the timeline for another major project—the U.S. 72 widening—has shifted significantly.

U.S. 72 Construction Pushed to 2027

According to ALDOT’s May report, construction on the first phase of the $92 million U.S. 72 project will now begin in Fiscal Year 2027. This section stretches from Huntsville Memorial Gardens to Providence Main and includes a bridge replacement. Although plans are 90% complete, the start date has been delayed.

Two more phases are in progress. The $36 million second phase, which covers Walnut Street to Huntsville Memorial Gardens, is currently in design. Construction should begin in 2029. Additionally, the $38.2 million third phase—from County Line Road to Walnut Street—is scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2030.

I-565 Widening Work Makes Steady Progress

Despite rain delays, crews from Wiregrass Construction continue making progress on I-565. The team is expanding the interstate to six lanes between County Line Road and Wall Triana Highway. Workers are adding new lanes in the median heading both east and west.

They are also expanding two sets of bridges: one just west of Exit 9 near Bradford Creek and another east of Intergraph Way near the Norfolk Southern railroad. Work is moving from west to east along the route.

Northern Bypass Spurs Development in North Huntsville

Another high-impact project, the $43 million Northern Bypass, has reached the 40% completion mark. Crews are actively working on grading, drainage, and utility lines.

This road is already driving new development. In May, Huntsville’s City Council secured an option to buy 17 acres for a major retail project at the bypass and Memorial Parkway. That land sits near the new Food City and Starbucks, both scheduled to open on June 28.

Updates on Other Key Road Projects

Several other projects are also moving ahead in the Huntsville metro.

The second phase of the $42 million Martin Road project—between Zierdt Road and Laracy Drive—is 25% complete. Construction crews are working on bridge foundations and drainage improvements. The first phase was previously finished.

The $44.2 million project at North Memorial Parkway and Mastin Lake is halfway complete. It includes upgrades to Sparkman Drive and Winchester Road, plus a new overpass to improve access.

Design plans are 85% complete for a $15 million access management project on U.S. 231, between Weatherly Road and Hobbs Road. Right-of-way purchases are beginning soon, with construction expected to start next fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the Winchester Road project—from Dominion Circle to Naugher Road—has reached the 90% design stage. Construction could begin next year after utility relocation is completed.

A $10 million project along Alabama 53, from Taurus Drive to Harvest Road, is ready for construction later this fiscal year. Planning and utility work are already underway.

The $4.2 million resurfacing on Madison Boulevard—from Westchester Road to Flagstone Drive—is almost finished.

On Jeff Road, a $13.5 million widening from south of Capshaw Road to north of Douglas Road is in the pipeline. Plans are 85% complete, and land acquisition will start soon. Construction could begin next year.

Blake Bottom Road will also see upgrades. The $20.8 million widening project—from Jeff Road to Alabama 255—will go to bid later this year. Utilities are currently being relocated.

Work is 75% complete on intersection improvements along Alabama 53 at Harvest Road, McKee Road, and Old Railroad Bed Road.

Preliminary engineering has begun for the $30 million Arsenal East Connector. This road will stretch from Bob Wallace Avenue to Gate 10, passing Patton Road. Construction is expected to begin in Fiscal 2028.

Finally, the city has hired a consultant to design improvements for the Resolute Way interchange on I-565. That contract is valued at $1.5 million.
