Huntsville OKs first sewer rate hike in 20 years to fund infrastructure upgrades

Huntsville has approved its first sewer rate increase in two decades, aimed at funding major infrastructure upgrades to its aging wastewater system.

Council Approves Long-Term Rate Plan

At its June 26 meeting, the Huntsville City Council voted 4–1 in favor of the rate hike. Under the new ordinance, the average monthly sewer bill will rise from $24.15 to $29.15 starting this year. Despite the change, that cost remains significantly below the current Alabama average of $52.14 per month.

Beginning in 2026, the rate will increase by $1 annually through 2034, ultimately reaching $39.15—still well under today’s state average.

Supporting a $150 Million Infrastructure Investment

The revenue from the increase will support a $150 million capital improvement plan spanning the next 10 years. The funds will be directed toward Huntsville’s sewer collection system and five wastewater treatment plants.

Meeting Aging System Demands

Much of Huntsville’s sewer infrastructure dates back to the 1950s. City officials say the rate adjustment is essential to ensure the system remains reliable, efficient, and compliant with regulatory standards. As with other utilities, regular reinvestment is necessary to maintain and modernize aging systems.
