Huntsville invests $30M in local agencies

Huntsville’s Fiscal 2026 budget dedicates more than $30 million to 60 outside agencies, supporting services that range from essential community programs to cultural and economic initiatives.

Library, Museums, and Arts Support

The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library leads the funding list, receiving over $5.6 million from the General Fund. This allocation covers 67% of the library system’s capital budget. The city said the funds will help increase attendance, diversify programming, and encourage community participation.

The Huntsville Museum of Art receives $1.2 million from the liquor and lodging fund. This funding represents 31% of the museum’s capital budget. The museum recently upgraded its HVAC system and aims to boost visitor numbers, memberships, and event revenue.

Arts Huntsville will receive $550,000 for marketing and promotion, $172,738 for staffing, $350,000 for public art, and $60,000 for the Sandra Moon Complex. The organization supports over 20 nonprofits, promotes more than 100 arts events, and distributes 28 grants.

Community and Mental Health Services

WellStone is allocated $864,000 to expand mental health services. This funding will reduce reliance on jails and emergency rooms by increasing access for uninsured residents. Additionally, it receives $120,000 for co-responder programs and $50,000 for jail diversion. Some funds were redirected to United Cerebral Palsy of Huntsville to support north Huntsville, following a city council request.

EarlyWorks Children’s Museum will receive $700,000, which covers 28% of its budget. The museum plans to increase revenue through admissions, sponsorships, and grants. It also expects higher attendance from underserved communities and tourists.

Historic and Recreational Sites

Burritt on the Mountain receives $575,000 to maintain its facilities and utilities. This ensures safe access for over 50,000 annual visitors, including school groups.

Huntsville Botanical Garden will receive $500,000, covering 6% of its capital budget. The garden aims to enhance visitor experiences, increase field trips, and strengthen conservation efforts.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center Education Foundation receives $325,000. Funding will expand workforce training and STEM programs. The center also plans to boost participation in Space Camp and increase corporate use of its facilities.
