Huntsville invests $1.5M to complete key “missing link” of Tennessee River Greenway

The Huntsville City Council has approved nearly $1.5 million for Grayson Carter & Son Contracting to complete the third phase of the Tennessee River Greenway, stretching from Hobbs Road to Green Cove Road.

Completing a Key Greenway Link

This 1.5-mile project will connect Elgies Greenway to Ditto Landing, where Madison County is building a $13 million event center with city support. City officials say the project will finalize a crucial loop along South Memorial Parkway, offering a 15-mile trail that links the Hays Farm area to the Jones Valley area. Council President Jennie Robinson noted the strong community interest, especially from local cyclists, in seeing this “missing link” completed.

Community Impact and Engagement

City Director of Urban and Economic Development Shane Davis said residents have been asking when the trail would be connected to provide seamless access to destinations along the greenway. The project also includes coordination with city planning and engineering departments to ensure smooth integration with previous phases.

Land Donation Supports Land Trust Discovery Center

In a related decision, the council approved donating 0.265 acres near the Trailhead Greenway to the Land Trust of North Alabama. The land will support construction of the Land Trust’s new Discovery Center off U.S. 72 East. During construction, existing parking will be temporarily relocated and replaced to maintain public access to the trails.
