Huntsville Ice Sports Center expansion breaks ground

City leaders traded shovels for pickaxes to officially launch a $44.6 million expansion of the Ice Sports Center (ISC), a project that will more than double the venue’s size.

Major Additions Coming

The upgrade adds 118,822 square feet to the current 83,934-square-foot facility. Plans include a new arena with seating for 1,254 spectators, a second sheet of ice with five dedicated curling lanes, new locker rooms, ADA-compliant elevators and seating, and expanded concessions and common areas.

Boost for Local Sports and Tourism

Mayor Tommy Battle said the expansion strengthens Huntsville’s ability to host tournaments and ice events, noting that ice sports have been part of the community for over 60 years. ISC Executive Director Dita Dotson-Bowser added that the project addresses long-standing demand for more ice time.

Timeline for Completion

The new arena is slated to open in late 2026, with the curling facility expected in early 2027, creating new opportunities for skating, hockey and curling enthusiasts across the region.
