With the push of a button, some patients at HH Health facilities can now access specialists at Huntsville Hospital through telehealth technology.
Expanding Access to Psychiatric and Neurological Care
Two HH Health hospitals have introduced high-tech telemedicine carts equipped with advanced cameras to help patients who need psychiatric or neurological support. These specialties were identified as having the greatest need for specialist access, according to Sara Werner, Telemedicine Program Manager for the health system.
Meeting a Critical Need in North Alabama
Behavioral health care remains a challenge across the region. The HH Health website notes that thousands in North Alabama struggle with issues such as depression and substance use. Yet the area has fewer than 75 licensed psychiatry practices, most concentrated in Madison County. By expanding telehealth, HH Health hopes to improve access for patients in underserved communities.
The program is already in place at Madison Hospital and is expected to expand to Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield later this year.
Reducing Burden on Patients and Families
“Travel can be a major burden, especially when long distances separate families,” Werner said. “For someone hospitalized in Huntsville with family in Florence, the cost and stress of traveling back and forth adds to an already difficult situation.”
Helen Keller Hospital already offers remote neurology consultations, allowing on-call neurologists at Huntsville Hospital to provide expert input from 75 miles away. These telehealth specialists can review medical histories, prescribe medications, and assist in developing treatment plans.
The two hospitals were chosen based on their ability to support the technology, including strong Wi-Fi and network bandwidth to ensure smooth virtual visits.
