Huntsville eyes 400-acre Westmoore Landing development with 3,000 homes

A new community called Westmoore Landing could reshape the area near the I-65 and I-565 interchange in Limestone County. Developers plan to build as many as 3,000 homes over several decades.

Zoning Approval Moves Project Forward

The Huntsville Planning Commission has approved a Planned Development zoning change for nearly 395 acres south of Alabama 20 and east of I-65. The land sits just outside Decatur’s city limits. The proposal now goes to the City Council for final consideration.

This change clears the way for a mixed-use project similar in style to Huntsville’s Village of Providence.

A Vision for Long-Term Growth

Land Innovations of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Rochford Realty & Construction Co. of Nashville will lead the development. Company president David Horwath said the full build-out could take up to 35 years.

The plan includes single-family homes, cottages, duplexes, townhomes, and apartments. A central town square will feature shops, restaurants, and event space. The project also includes parks, trails, and playgrounds, designed to create a walkable community with plenty of open space.

Focus on Conservation and Partnerships

Developers are working closely with the Singing River Trail project and the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. These partnerships aim to protect natural areas and encourage outdoor activity.

Horwath said the team completed a tree and environmental analysis to reduce disruption to local wildlife. He also noted efforts to preserve areas with historic or cultural significance, including former Chickasaw settlement sites.

Meeting Housing Demand in a Growing Market

City planners say the project aligns with Huntsville’s long-range growth strategy. The city continues to expand west toward major employers like Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, Polaris, and Amazon.

As the region grows, officials hope Westmoore Landing will provide new housing options for workers and families. The project could help ease demand and strengthen Huntsville’s position as one of the fastest-growing cities in the Southeast.
