Huntsville expanded its city limits again this week, though the latest annexation was modest compared to earlier growth this year.
Recent Annexations
The City Council approved annexing 14.62 acres east of Greenbrier Road, north of Interstate 565, and 9.93 acres east of U.S. 431 South, south of Wade Road. The Greenbrier property is city-owned, while Nirmala Investments, LLC owns the U.S. 431 parcel. No specific uses for the land were listed, though the Greenbrier area is near major Huntsville employers.
City Zoning Approvals
Council members also approved zoning for more than half of this year’s annexed land. Residence 1 and Industrial Park Districts were applied to 1,013.96 acres south of River Loop Road and surrounding Vaughn Road, with limited residential development planned. Additionally, Residence 2, Residence 2-B, and Highway Business C-4 districts were approved for 572.48 acres north of Bob Wade Lane, aligning with the city’s master plan.
Overall Growth Impact
With these additions, Huntsville now covers 229 square miles, surpassing Chicago’s 227 square miles at the end of last year. The council also approved additional residential and industrial districts, including a planned industrial district on 6.4 acres west of Segers Road.
