The City of Huntsville and the Alabama Department of Transportation have approved a funding agreement to install digital highway message signs along U.S. 72 East, U.S. 431, and U.S. 231.
Funding Agreement Details
The total cost of the project is $3.1 million. The Federal Carbon Reduction Program will cover 80% ($2.48 million), while the City of Huntsville will provide the remaining 20% ($640,000). City Council finalized the agreement earlier this month.
Locations and Expansion
The new signs will be similar to the existing message boards on Interstate 565, where a third board is currently under construction. Additional boards will be installed on Memorial Parkway, Governors Drive, and U.S. 72 East near Chapman Mountain, although exact placements are still being determined.
Improving Road Safety
Mayor Tommy Battle highlighted the benefits of the technology. “These signs inform drivers about what’s ahead and will make our roadways even safer,” he said, emphasizing the value of real-time updates for motorists.
