The Huntsville Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Office may soon undergo a name change, an online report revealed.
Councilmembers Michelle Watkins and Jennie Robinson have introduced an ordinance to revert its name to the “Office of Multicultural Affairs,” its original title from 2009, according to the city’s website. The office was renamed DEI in 2021 by former Director Kenny Anderson, who aimed to align the name with his vision for the office.

ToggleA focus on broader community engagement
Councilmember Jennie Robinson of District 3 highlighted the importance of shifting the office’s focus outward to engage the broader community, noting that traditional DEI efforts often center on internal organizational goals. Robinson and District 1 Councilmember Michelle Watkins, who are spearheading this initiative, believe the name “Office of Multicultural Affairs” better reflects their mission.
“Renaming it to multicultural affairs ensures we include everyone while maintaining an office that remains diverse,” Watkins stated. Robinson added that her concerns about the DEI name have persisted since its adoption, emphasizing the need for a more outward-facing approach to community inclusivity.
Timing the change with new leadership
This proposal comes shortly after the appointment of Dr. Randy Barbour as the new DEI director. Robinson views this leadership change as an opportunity to realign the office’s vision. “Any time you bring in new leadership, it’s an opportunity to bring in a new vision, a new way of doing things,” she said.
Embracing Huntsville’s growing diversity
Watkins further emphasized the city’s evolving demographics, stating, “Huntsville has become very diverse. We want to ensure everyone feels included and connected to the city.”
