Huntsville closing in on 250K residents and growing faster than almost any U.S. city

From thousands of new homes to major infrastructure projects, Huntsville is adding about 18 new residents a day. Here’s what’s driving the boom.

Population Surge and National Standing

Huntsville’s Planning Department estimates that as of July 1, the city’s population reached 249,102 — a 15.9% increase since the 2020 Census. That’s more than 34,000 new residents over the past five years. The rapid growth places Huntsville among the top 20 fastest-growing cities in the U.S. with populations over 100,000, and among the nation’s 100 largest cities.

Housing Growth Fuels the Rise

From January to June 2025, Huntsville added 1,945 housing units, bringing the total to 120,904. While that’s slightly slower than previous record years, the city is still on track to add more than 4,000 new units this year, the fourth consecutive year of historic housing development. Since 2020, over 20,500 new homes have been built, offering more options for a range of incomes and lifestyles, from urban apartments to suburban neighborhoods.

Strategy Behind the Expansion

Mayor Tommy Battle said the city’s growth plan prioritizes quality of life for both longtime residents and newcomers. The strategy focuses on keeping housing diverse and affordable while expanding key infrastructure such as roads and schools. City officials say the increase in housing strengthens the tax base, enabling more investment in walkable communities and preserving affordability as Huntsville continues to grow.
