Huntsville City Schools seeks Partial Unitary Status

Huntsville City Schools (HCS) has filed an unopposed motion for partial unitary status—a significant move toward being released from decades-long federal court supervision related to desegregation.

Progress in Extracurriculars, Facilities, and Staffing

The motion, filed with no opposition from the U.S. Department of Justice, seeks partial unitary status in three areas: extracurricular activities, facilities, and faculty and staff. The district already holds partial unitary status in transportation.

If approved, HCS will have achieved unitary status in four of the seven “Green factors” required for full release from federal oversight.

Three Areas Still Under Review

The district must still address equitable access to course offerings and programs, student discipline, and student assignment. These categories remain under court monitoring.

Superintendent: A Milestone for the District

Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton called the filing a proud moment for the district.
“This is a proud and affirming moment for Huntsville City Schools,” he said. “This acknowledgment of our progress speaks volumes about our district’s commitment to student success.”

HCS previously invited public feedback on the request. The motion comes as the city reflects on its civil rights history—March 11 marked 62 years since the original desegregation lawsuit was filed by parents from five Huntsville schools, including the family of Sonnie Hereford.
