Huntsville approves second-largest land annexation of 2025

Huntsville has approved the annexation of nearly 700 acres along Highway 72 east near Gurley, marking the city’s second largest land annexation of the year.

Expanding Industrial and Commercial Opportunities

The City Council voted to annex 686 acres, which will be zoned for industrial and commercial use. Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized that the move will attract more industry to North Alabama. He noted that companies following Eli Lilly, as well as suppliers, will benefit from having ready-to-build sites in the area.

Enhancing Infrastructure and Recreation

City planners highlighted that the annexation offers opportunities to expand greenways and improve recreational activities. The area also benefits from nearby rail lines and the heavily used Highway 72 east corridor, making it ideal for business and logistics.

Annexation Process and Approval

The Stevens property owners petitioned the city for annexation, and the City Council approved it based on the property’s suitability and strategic location. Huntsville only annexes land when a petition is submitted, ensuring the expansion aligns with community and economic needs.
