The City has strengthened its noise ordinance for vehicles in response to numerous resident complaints. The City Council unanimously approved the amendment, introduced by Council Member Jennie Robinson, with a 4-0 vote.
Increased fines for repeat offenders
Under the revised ordinance, first-time violators may receive a $50 fine, but they will have the chance to correct the issue and avoid the penalty. A second violation within 12 months will result in a $250 fine, while a third offense within the same period could lead to a $500 fine, up to 10 days in jail, or both.
“We worked with the City’s legal team to introduce higher fines for repeat offenders,” Robinson said. “The key aspect of this ordinance is that first-time violations remain a ‘fix it’ citation, with fines only applied if someone knowingly disregards the law after their initial warning.”
Addressing resident and law enforcement concerns
Robinson emphasized that these updates address concerns from residents who prioritize quiet neighborhoods, as well as law enforcement officers seeking better tools to enforce noise regulations.

The amended ordinance takes effect on March 1.
“The Huntsville Police Department is committed to maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all residents,” Police Chief Kirk Giles said. “Excessive noise is a frequent concern in our community, affecting both public safety and quality of life.
By introducing increased fines for repeat violations, this amendment promotes compliance and reduces recurring infractions. Our officers will continue to enforce these rules fairly and consistently to uphold the standards that Huntsville residents expect and deserve.”
