Huntsville acquires historic Downtown courthouse in no-cost property swap

The Huntsville City Council has approved an agreement with the General Services Administration to acquire the former U.S. Courthouse on Holmes Avenue.

No-Cost Property Swap Finalized

This long-anticipated transfer involves no monetary exchange. Instead, the City of Huntsville will receive the former courthouse at 101 Holmes Ave. NE in return for the 4.76 acres it donated for the new federal courthouse, which opened earlier this year at 660 Gallatin St. SW, near the Huntsville Hospital medical district.

Historic Building to Remain Protected

Although the City has not yet finalized how it will use the old courthouse, the building remains a valuable asset. Built in 1936 in the Neo-Classical Revival style, the structure previously served as a U.S. post office, courthouse, and federal office building. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The agreement includes provisions to protect its historically significant architectural features, both inside and out.

Mural Relocated to New Courthouse

Of special note to many residents, the historic mural that once hung in the main courtroom has been carefully moved to the new federal courthouse.

Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized the building’s importance:

“The former courthouse is an important asset for our community and the City looks forward to how it can be used in the future,” he said. “It is important to the City that its future uses respect the historical integrity of the building.”

With this transition complete, Huntsville gains a piece of its history back while planning for future possibilities.
