The Huntsville Police Department’s Zero in the Zone initiative, launched during the first month of the 2025–2026 school year, resulted in more than double the number of citations compared to last year.
Traffic stops and citations spike
Between August 4 and 29, HPD officers conducted 249 traffic stops, issued 234 citations, and gave 72 warnings. In the same period in 2024, officers recorded 146 stops, 93 citations and 54 warnings, marking a sharp year-over-year increase in enforcement activity.
Safety is the priority
“One mistake in a school zone is one too many,” said HPD Chief Kirk Giles. “We’re here to make sure every student gets to school and back home safely.” Officers focused on mornings and afternoons when school traffic was heaviest, ensuring drivers slowed down and stayed alert.
Reminder for drivers year-round
HPD is urging drivers to remain cautious beyond the back-to-school period. Officials ask motorists to obey posted signs, watch for students and Safety Patrol Aides, and avoid distractions. “Slow down, put the phone away and watch out for our students. It’s just that simple,” Giles said.
