Historic street signs coming soon to Dallas, Lowe, and Lincoln Mills

The initiative to add the Dallas Mill Village to Huntsville’s list of historic districts is moving closer to reality, according to a report.

Residents and city planners are actively working to finalize design options for the neighborhood’s iconic brown and white street signs. This effort, driven by strong community interest and city support, seeks to honor the area’s history while joining 11 other districts already listed on the national historic register.

Community collaboration on design choices

Recently, residents gathered at Jackson Way Baptist Church to hear updates and discuss signage designs. Katie Stamps, Huntsville’s Preservation Planner, led the meeting. She described it as a collaborative session focused on creating the new historic street signs. Importantly, Stamps, a Madison native who now resides in District 2, clarified that this project is limited to signage. Unlike some districts, such as Five Points, this effort will not involve design reviews for homes or properties.

The origin of the Dallas Mill Village Project

The idea for this project began with retired pastor Larry Layne, a lifelong resident of the area. While driving through the city, he noticed the historic signs in other neighborhoods and wondered why Dallas Mill Village didn’t have similar recognition. Motivated by this realization, Layne contacted Council Member David Little and Preservation Planner Stamps for guidance. Together, they worked to develop a plan, and the community quickly embraced the idea.

Honoring the history of Dallas Mill Village

Dallas Mill Village was once a thriving mill community located northeast of downtown and between Five Points and Lincoln Mill Village. Although the mill burned down years ago, its legacy continues to resonate with residents. The proposed signage designs highlight key elements of the area’s history, including images of the Dallas Mill, the iconic water tank near Lincoln Mill, and archival photos of mill workers. At the meeting, residents voted on their favorite designs. For those unable to attend, the option to submit suggestions via email or phone remains available.

Next Steps in the signage initiative

Looking ahead, the city plans to hold another town hall meeting to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. Stamps encouraged residents to share feedback directly via email at katherine.stamps@huntsvilleal.gov or by phone at (256) 650-4779. She also stressed that there is no cost to the neighborhood, as the city will handle all expenses and logistics. Once the Dallas Mill Village signage is finalized, efforts will shift to Lincoln and Lowe Mill neighborhoods, which also lack historic street signs.

This initiative represents more than adding new street signs for the residents of Dallas Mill Village. Instead, it reflects a commitment to preserving and celebrating the neighborhood’s unique history for future generations. By involving the community every step of the way, the city ensures that this project not only honors the past but also fosters a stronger sense of connection among residents.
