Historic railroad coxcar finds new home in Scottsboro Boys Museum

The City of Huntsville will donate a historic railroad boxcar to the Scottsboro Boys Museum to support public education and historical preservation.

Connecting the Boxcar to History

The railcar closely resembles the type used during the 1931 Scottsboro Boys case. During that incident, nine young African American men were arrested while traveling by train from Chattanooga to Huntsville. Authorities later wrongfully accused and convicted them.

As a result, the case became a defining moment in American legal history and the civil rights movement. By displaying the boxcar, the museum will give visitors a clearer, more tangible connection to the events that unfolded.

Strengthening Education Across North Alabama

The Scottsboro Multicultural Foundation operates the Scottsboro Boys Museum and focuses on preserving this important history. By relocating the boxcar, the museum can expand its exhibits and enhance its educational programs.

City leaders emphasized that the museum serves residents across North Alabama, including Huntsville. Therefore, officials say the donation aligns with the City’s commitment to education, historical awareness, and preservation.

Understanding the AAR Boxcar

The donated railcar qualifies as an “AAR” boxcar, a term used by the Association of American Railroads. These enclosed railcars typically carry freight and feature a simple, adaptable design.

Because of their versatility, railroads have relied on boxcars for decades. City officials say donating this piece reflects Huntsville’s ongoing effort to preserve history while supporting meaningful public learning opportunities.
