The “Kitchen Cops” across north Alabama have been busy this holiday season, according to online reports. Several local businesses faced serious health code issues in the days leading up to Christmas, with a few even being temporarily shut down.
DeKalb County
In DeKalb County, La Tienda Ideal in Albertville made the list. This combined restaurant and grocery store was inspected as separate entities. The restaurant portion received a failing score of 64, citing roaches, mold in the ice machine, and mold on cooked meat in the cooler. Inspectors also found medication near food items, missing paper towels at a sink, and several unlabeled items in coolers.
The market side of La Tienda Ideal scored slightly higher at 77, but still failed. Roaches were again noted, and inspectors reported improperly stored chemicals and a sink without hot water. The state website confirms the business was closed until these issues were addressed.
Elsewhere in DeKalb County, the Fyffe Stop & Go on Main Street scored 83 due to mold found in soda nozzles.
Limestone County
In Limestone County, the Krystal on Highway 72 near the I-65 interchange was closed on December 22 due to “inoperable toilets and sewage backup in the restrooms.” Attempts to confirm whether it has reopened were unsuccessful, as the listed phone number was disconnected.
Otherwise, no failing grades were reported in Limestone County this week.
Madison County
Burger King on Jeff Road in Harvest received a 79 for dirty storage containers, a blocked sink, and broken fryer baskets.
Morgan County
In Morgan County, the Citgo on Old Moulton Road scored 81 due to missing soap at a sink and several food temperature violations.
