Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa offers $10,000 roof repair grants to homeowners

Homeowners in Greene, Hale, Pickens, and Tuscaloosa counties may qualify for a $10,000 grant to help fund a new, storm-resistant roof. The program is a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa and Strengthen Alabama Homes.

FORTIFIED Roof Program Details

The grants are available through the FORTIFIED Roof Program, which provides wind-mitigation upgrades for owner-occupied, single-family homes.

All work must meet the FORTIFIED Roof standard, a nationally recognized construction guideline designed to protect homes from severe weather.

Homes with a FORTIFIED Roof designation may also qualify for discounts on the wind portion of homeowners insurance. Habitat funding comes from the insurance industry.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, homes must:

Be located in one of the four eligible counties

Not be listed for sale during the application process

Be built on a permanent foundation and structurally sound

Be the primary residence of the applicant, who must be listed on the deed

Have homeowners insurance with wind coverage and flood insurance if in a flood zone

Mobile homes, townhomes, duplexes, and condos are not eligible. Household income must not exceed $85,687 annually, and applicants must provide proof of income. There is no application fee, but approved homeowners must pay a $350 FORTIFIED evaluation fee.

Application and Additional Information

Applications must be notarized when required and submitted by mail or delivered within seven days of receipt. Habitat notes that processing may take several months and depends on available funding and home inspections.

Homeowners are responsible for any costs exceeding the $10,000 grant. While Habitat does not offer financing for additional expenses, it partners with a local credit union that may provide low-interest loans.
