Federal research funding at UAH exceeds $154.5M in FY 2024

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) announced Thursday that its research and development projects secured more than $154.5 million in federal funding last fiscal year. This achievement highlights the university’s growing influence in research and development.

Strong Research Performance at UAH

Over the last five years, UAH’s total research expenditures have reached $639 million. This consistent growth reflects the university’s commitment to advancing science and technology.

National Rankings and Achievements

UAH ranks among the top 10 federally funded programs in four key areas, according to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey. These include aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering, computer and information sciences, atmospheric science and meteorology, and astronomy and astrophysics. The university also earned national recognition for its Department of Defense and NASA-funded research.

Local and National Impact

Robert Lindquist, UAH’s vice president for research and economic development, emphasized the importance of the university’s partnerships with Redstone Arsenal and Cummings Research Park. Our programs’ national rankings showcase the hard work of our faculty, staff, and students,” he said.

For 12 years in a row, UAH has had five or more programs in the top 25 nationwide. UAH also leads Alabama in federal research expenditures in multiple categories, including aerospace engineering, computer science, and NASA funding.

With 17 research centers, UAH focuses on areas crucial to national security and global innovation, such as hypersonics, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. Lindquist added, “We’re committed to driving innovation and collaborating with partners across government and industry to solve pressing challenges.”

The HERD Survey is the primary source for data on research and development expenditures at U.S. universities. It tracks funding by field of research and personnel details.
