A generous contribution from the Harman family has added 25 acres to the Monte Sano Nature Preserve, strengthening conservation efforts in Huntsville.
Honoring a Naturalist
The donation was made in memory of William Max Harman, remembered by his family as “a true naturalist and lover of life.” The new property features upland hardwood forest with minimal invasive species, providing critical habitat for local flora and fauna.
Strengthening Conservation Corridors
The 25-acre addition shares about 1,826 feet of boundary with land managed by the Forever Wild Land Trust as part of Monte Sano State Park. This expansion helps maintain ecological connectivity and preserves the scenic character of the mountain.
Future Opportunities
Beyond protecting wildlife, the site could offer future public recreation or environmental education programs, according to the Land Trust of North Alabama. The Harman family expressed gratitude for the support of the Land Trust and highlighted that the donation honors their parents, Inge Steuer and Harlan S. Harman, who raised their family in the area.
