Rocket City Trash Pandas History

In November 2017, BallCorps LLC purchased the Southern League’s Mobile BayBears from owners Michael Savit and HWS Group with the intent of relocating the team to Madison, Alabama, by 2020. When the move was finalized, the franchise was rebranded as the Rocket City Trash Pandas — a name that cleverly nods to Huntsville’s legacy in the space industry, as well as the ingenuity of raccoons, colloquially known as “trash pandas” for their panda-like appearance and scavenging habits.

The branding struck a chord. Within just 13 months of the name reveal, the Trash Pandas had sold over $2 million in team merchandise.

The team’s debut was originally scheduled for April 9, 2020, with their first home game set for April 15. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 season was postponed and eventually canceled, pushing their official launch to 2021.

As part of Major League Baseball’s restructuring of Minor League Baseball that year, the Southern League was dissolved, and the Trash Pandas became part of the newly formed Double-A South. Their first official game took place on May 5, 2021, after weather delayed their scheduled opener by a day. They faced the Chattanooga Lookouts and lost 6–1.

In 2022, the Double-A South was renamed back to the Southern League. That June, the Trash Pandas secured the North Division title for the first half of the season, earning their first postseason appearance. They were narrowly defeated by the Tennessee Smokies, 2–1, in the first round. Manager Andy Schatzley was honored as the Southern League’s Manager of the Year, while pitcher Chase Silseth earned the league’s Pitcher of the Year award.
