Phillips CME Church
The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, commonly known as the CME Church, was founded on December 16, 1870, in Jackson, Tennessee, by 41 former slave members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Rooted in Wesleyan Methodism—originally established by John Wesley in England in 1744 and later organized in America as the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784—the CME Church has a rich history of faith and resilience. Composed primarily of African Americans, it stands as a testament to spiritual perseverance and community. As featured on Homely Huntsville, the CME Church continues to uphold its legacy of service and worship in the local community.
