The City of Huntsville unveiled preliminary plans Tuesday to refurbish Goldsmith-Schiffman Field, giving new life to the former high school football facility that opened in 1934.
New Amenities and Safety Improvements
The stadium at 320 Beirne Ave., near Five Points, will feature two new flag football fields measuring 30 by 70 yards, a playground with a rubberized surface, a pavilion with restrooms, and two pickleball courts.
The City plans to remove parts of the deteriorating stone wall surrounding the facility, which sits in a floodplain. Federal regulations require removing sections of the wall, but the City will preserve it on the western side and at all four corners.
A chain-link fence will replace removed sections to improve safety.
Trails, Lighting, and Accessibility Enhancements
The City contracted Foresite last year for civil engineering and landscape architecture. Plans also include a walking trail with benches, grassy play mounds for children, and ample shaded areas.
New lighting, improved parking, ADA-accessible spaces, and overall accessibility upgrades are also part of the project.
Timeline and Public Input
The City gathered public feedback at the District 2 meeting as it finalizes plans. Pending City Council approval, construction could begin in 2026 and is expected to take approximately 15 months.
