City named a runner-friendly community

Huntsville has officially earned recognition as a Runner Friendly Community, a designation awarded by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA).

For local runners, the title confirms what many already know: Huntsville offers a safe, welcoming, and well-supported place to log miles.
Whether runners track training with Runna, Strava, Nike Run Club, or another app, the designation signals confidence. More importantly, it highlights the city’s commitment to active lifestyles and livable neighborhoods.

A Community Built for Runners

The RRCA’s Runner Friendly Community program recognizes cities that actively support runners through infrastructure, programming, and partnerships. In Huntsville, that support shows up in parks, greenways, races, and local organizations working together.

Huntsville Track Club President Mica Anderson said the designation reflects years of collaboration. The city, race organizers, and running groups continue to expand events and improve greenway systems. As a result, runners of all experience levels can train, compete, and connect.

In addition, organizations like the Huntsville Sports Commission and the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau help promote Huntsville nationally. Their efforts attract high-profile running events and bring new visitors to the city.

Events, Groups, and a Welcoming Culture

Huntsville supports running at every level. The city hosts major events such as the Cotton Row Run, Monte Sano 15K, and Rocket City Marathon Race Weekend. At the same time, it offers unique community races, including the Crisis Services Turkey Trot and local fun runs.

Several free, weekly run groups make it easy for newcomers to join. We Run Huntsville, Fleet Feet Running Club, and the Huntsville Pub Run regularly welcome first-time runners. According to Gregg Gelmis of We Run Huntsville, the variety keeps running accessible and exciting. Runners can choose greenways, road routes, or challenging trails on Monte Sano.

The Huntsville Pub Run, organized by Jeff and Gerri Plain, meets weekly and blends fitness with community. Over the years, the group has helped form friendships, marriages, and even growing families. In addition, the Plaines also organize the Rise & Shine Run and Alabama’s only weekly parkrun at Hays Farm.

Greenways and World-Class Courses

Huntsville’s growing trail network plays a major role in the designation. The city’s Greenway Master Plan outlines 312 miles of planned trails. Already, nearly 73 miles connect creeks, parks, and more than 3,000 acres of public green space.

Near downtown, John Hunt Park offers a nationally recognized cross-country course. The venue has hosted championship-level events, including NCAA regional competitions and national high school championships.

Huntsville Sports Commission Executive Director Mark Russell said the course strengthens the city’s reputation as a premier running destination. By welcoming athletes from across the country, Huntsville continues to raise its profile in the running world.

From neighborhood greenways to elite race courses, Huntsville proves that it is built for runners. Lace up and hit the road.
