City moves forward on $6.3M railroad bridge replacement

Huntsville is investing $800,000 to help replace a railroad bridge that collapsed earlier this year as a train was crossing, according to online reports. The new structure is part of a larger $6.3 million improvement project designed to boost safety and rail capacity.

Funding the Bridge Replacement

The City of Huntsville approved its $800,000 share after the Huntsville-Madison County Railroad Authority secured a major federal grant. The remaining costs will be covered by the Railroad Authority, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, and a 2022 Federal Railroad Administration CRISI grant totaling more than $3.4 million.

City officials said they committed the funds months ago, and the grant approval allowed the project to move forward.

Improving Rail Safety and Infrastructure

The original bridge collapsed in July, sending two rail cars into Aldridge Creek. No injuries were reported, but the incident highlighted the need for upgrades.

The project includes much more than a replacement trestle. Crews will also install new cross ties, resurface 13.25 miles of track, build 7,115 feet of new siding, and extend an existing transload track by 100 feet. These improvements aim to increase safety for both rail and roadway users.

Officials said the upgrades will support vital industries and expand the capacity of the local rail system.

Potential for Future Passenger Use

Council members also discussed how the upgraded line could benefit the public. District 4 Councilman Bill Kling asked whether the improvements could eventually support passenger rides between downtown and the southern part of the city.

According to online reports, city staff said the project will allow for future passenger-style traffic, opening the door for possible tourism-related uses down the road.
