The Huntsville City Council has approved a resolution to create the North Alabama Public Energy District. This new effort brings together Huntsville Utilities, the City of Athens, and the Water Works, Sewer and Gas Board of Scottsboro.
A Regional Response to Infrastructure Needs
Athens and Scottsboro had already passed similar resolutions. With Huntsville now on board, the region is taking a united step forward. Together, the members will evaluate future energy needs and critical infrastructure challenges across North Alabama.
The new district is more than a planning group. It offers a formal structure to research solutions, coordinate projects, and seek funding for long-term improvements.
New Leadership and Next Steps
As part of the resolution, the council appointed Huntsville Utilities President and CEO Wes Kelley to serve on the Energy District’s board of directors. Kelley emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating that forming the district is only the beginning.
“Infrastructure isn’t merely a local issue; it’s regional, so we need a regional approach,” he said. The group plans to study the construction of an additional natural gas transmission pipeline as part of its initial work.
Focused on Reliable Energy for the Future
The North Alabama Public Energy District aims to secure long-term access to affordable and reliable energy. By planning as a region, the district hopes to better address future demands and ensure economic growth.
This joint effort reflects a proactive step to give North Alabama more control over its energy future. Through shared goals and resources, the district is positioned to tackle the infrastructure challenges that affect the entire region.
