Huntsville is continuing its rapid growth, and the city council will soon decide on adding more land to the city’s footprint. On Thursday, December 18, the council will vote on an ordinance to annex 724 acres, following this year’s expansion of over 2,000 acres.
Locations of the Proposed Annexations
The new land includes:
686.46 acres north of Little Cove Road and east and west of Highway 72 E
1.41 acres south of Sutton Road and west of Woodside Drive
36.54 acres south of Martin Road and east of Electronics Boulevard
Infrastructure Remains a Priority
Mayor Tommy Battle highlighted the city’s focus on improving infrastructure alongside growth. He recently met with state legislators to ensure Huntsville road projects receive priority in the upcoming legislative session.
“Our main focus is going to be on roads,” Battle said. “We are finishing Restore Our Roads One, and Restore Our Roads Two is next. These projects will take 10 to 12 years to complete, but they are essential for supporting our growing population.”
Battle added that discussions with the governor’s office and the Alabama Department of Transportation have been productive, with at least one of six planned road projects expected to move forward soon.
Railroad Improvements and AI Alerts
During the December 4 council meeting, members also approved an $800,000 funding contribution to assist the Huntsville-Madison County Railroad Authority (HMCRA) with replacing the Aldridge Creek railroad bridge. The project’s total cost is $6.32 million, with the remaining funding provided by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), a 2022 Federal Railroad Administration CRISI grant, and HMCRA.
District 5 Councilmember John Meredith announced plans to explore AI-based notifications for blocked railroad crossings. This system would alert residents via text messages when trains block certain roads, helping drivers avoid long delays caused by train traffic.
