The Huntsville City Council has approved $113.5 million for Huntsville Utilities capital projects in Fiscal Year 2026, funding upgrades across the electric, water and gas systems.
Major Electric System Improvements
About $64.5 million will go to electric upgrades, including the utility’s first grid battery storage project and automation of underground switchgear in the downtown network. The plan sets aside $12 million for new transformers, more than $8.5 million for vehicles and equipment, and funding for a northwest Madison County substation expansion and a battery energy storage substation.
Water Department Investments
The water department will receive $27.6 million for projects such as new construction and the installation of networked water meters across Madison and Limestone counties. Major work includes a $3 million booster pump station and a $2.7 million water main in southeast Madison County, along with metering upgrades in Limestone County and a Pulaski Pike water line project, each costing more than $1 million.
Gas System Upgrades
Nearly $11.2 million is earmarked for the gas department. Plans call for new construction, a $1.9 million McKee/Wall Triana connection, and system looping in north Huntsville and north Madison County to improve resiliency. Huntsville Utilities will also relocate a high-pressure gas main under Providence Main to a less populated area for safety.
“These are our annual, normal construction capital appropriations,” said Huntsville Utilities CEO Wes Kelley, noting that the work will enhance reliability and provide the redundancy needed to meet the city’s growth.
