Families in Huntsville will soon have a chance to enjoy a popular summer tradition on the water, according to online reports.
Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo Returns to Brahan Spring Park
The annual Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo is set for Saturday, June 6, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Brahan Spring Park Lagoon. The event welcomes young anglers ages 6 to 12 for a morning of fishing and outdoor fun.
Organizers say the lagoon will be stocked with more than 700 pounds of catfish. In addition, the event will include 19 tagged fish worth $100 each and one special tagged fish worth $1,000.
Fishing begins at 7 a.m., and participants must be registered and checked in to qualify for prizes. The event concludes at 10 a.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m.
A Community Tradition Focused on Outdoor Fun
Huntsville Parks & Recreation hosts the rodeo each year as part of its youth programming. Officials say the goal is to encourage children to spend time outdoors while learning basic fishing skills in a safe, family-friendly setting.
Children may receive help with baiting hooks and handling fish. However, they must cast and reel in their catches on their own. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, bait, and seating for comfort throughout the event.
Practice Sessions Offered Ahead of the Event
For families looking to prepare, Brahan Spring Recreation Center will offer a “Get Fishing Rodeo Ready” program for ages 6 to 12. Sessions will run on Saturdays May 16, 23, and 30 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Space is limited for the practice program, and registration is required in advance. Officials say the sessions give young anglers a chance to build confidence before the main event.
