A new middle school is one step closer to serving Huntsville students.
According to online reports, the Huntsville Planning Commission has approved plans for a 125,000-square-foot Huntsville Middle School that is expected to open in August 2028.
New campus will replace Huntsville Junior High
The new school will be built south of Lowe Avenue SE and west of California Street. According to online reports, it will replace Huntsville Junior High School and serve students in grades six through eight.
The two-story campus will have room for approximately 750 students. Plans also allow for future expansion as enrollment grows.
Modern classrooms and student amenities
The new middle school will include 10 classrooms for each grade level, along with dedicated spaces for band, choir, drama, and physical education.
The campus will also feature a large commons area designed for student gathering. In a future phase, the school system plans to add a football field.
In addition, planners will close a small roadway that currently runs through the campus. This change will allow students to reach outdoor play areas without crossing a street.
Infrastructure and landscaping improvements
According to online reports, the project is part of Huntsville City Schools‘ 10-year, $600 million capital improvement plan.
The campus design also includes significant landscaping updates. Although construction will require the removal of some existing trees, developers plan to plant 137 new trees throughout the property.
Meanwhile, nearby infrastructure improvements are also moving forward. A planned Lowe Avenue project will help improve access to the new school while supporting continued growth in the surrounding area.
