Huntsville is moving forward with plans to expand the downtown area and improve major public facilities.
According to online reports, the Huntsville City Council approved a new 1% lodging tax and a tax increment financing (TIF) district to help fund a major expansion of the Von Braun Center and additional infrastructure projects.
Funding Plan Approved for Von Braun Center Expansion
The approved TIF 9 district is expected to provide significant funding for improvements at the Von Braun Center and other downtown projects. According to online reports, the plan includes approximately $200 million for VBC improvements along with additional funding for several other community infrastructure projects.
The Von Braun Center expansion is expected to add more than 100,000 square feet of event and exhibit space, along with new meeting areas, upgraded facilities, parking improvements, and other enhancements.
Downtown Projects Included in New TIF District
The TIF district covers nearly 3,700 acres and will support multiple improvement projects throughout Huntsville.
Planned projects include upgrades to the North Huntsville Beltline Greenway, development of a new Mill Creek Park, improvements along Lowe Avenue, and renovations to the former federal courthouse building.
According to online reports, the funding mechanism uses future property tax growth from new development within the district to support infrastructure improvements. The program does not increase existing property tax rates or reduce school funding.
New Lodging Tax Will Support Tourism Growth
The Huntsville City Council also approved an additional 1% lodging tax, with revenue designated to support the Von Braun Center expansion.
According to online reports, the tax is supported by the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau and local hospitality groups. The additional cost applies to visitors staying in local lodging rather than creating a new required tax for residents.
The projects are expected to support downtown growth, expand event opportunities, and strengthen Huntsville’s position as a destination for conferences, entertainment, and community events.
