Huntsville’s Von Braun Center is moving closer to a major expansion that could reshape its convention and event space.
Construction could begin later this year
The Huntsville Planning Commission recently approved the location, character and extent of the $200 million project. According to online reports, construction could begin as early as October or November 2026.
The work will happen in phases over about three to four years. This approach will allow the Von Braun Center to continue hosting events during construction.
The project will use funding from a new tax increment financing district and an increase in the city’s lodging tax.
What the expansion will add
The renovation will expand the convention center across areas now used for surface parking, loading and other support functions.
Plans call for:
- More than 200,000 square feet of connected exhibit space
- A significantly larger exhibit hall
- Expanded ballroom space
- Additional meeting rooms
- A new commercial kitchen
- Improved circulation and wayfinding
- Parking beneath the expanded building
- Meeting spaces overlooking Pinhook Creek
The exhibit space could nearly double the center’s convention capacity. The expanded ballroom could also become the largest in Alabama.
The project will connect with the future linear park planned as part of Huntsville’s $65 million Pinhook Creek PARC project.
Growing demand is driving the project
The need for additional space became especially clear during this year’s Space & Missile Defense Symposium.
The event attracted about 11,000 attendees and 320 exhibiting companies. More than 250 companies also waited for exhibit space, while the 2027 event has already filled its available exhibit area.
City and convention officials say the expansion will help Huntsville compete for larger conferences. It will also give existing events more room to grow.
The project reflects the city’s continued growth as a destination for defense, aerospace and other large-scale events. Once complete, the expanded Von Braun Center could bring more visitors, exhibitors and economic activity to downtown Huntsville.
