Huntsville’s Northern Bypass to be renamed

Huntsville’s Northern Bypass will soon carry a familiar name as development accelerates across the city’s north side.
Northern Bypass to Become Bob Wade Lane

The Huntsville Planning Commission discussed renaming the Northern Bypass, also known as Alabama 255, to Bob Wade Lane. The existing Bob Wade Lane — currently located north of the bypass under construction — will later be renamed by the City Council.

City planning officials said the change will streamline naming along the corridor as growth continues in north Huntsville.

Major Developments Move Forward

Two high-profile projects received initial lot approvals. Westmoore Landing, a nearly 400-acre mixed-use development near the Interstate 65 and 565 interchange, had its first 63 lots approved.

Plans call for approximately 3,000 homes, along with commercial space, parks and a town center over a multi-decade buildout.

The $240 million North Village Town Center also received approval for five lots. The shopping center, located south of the Northern Bypass and west of North Memorial Parkway, will feature Target and The Home Depot as anchor tenants. Commissioners also approved highway business zoning for nearly 60 adjacent acres tied to the project.

Additional Subdivisions and Ordinance Update

Elsewhere, the Commission granted preliminary approval for new phases of High Park Estates at Mountain Preserve and the Willows at Wilson Cove subdivisions, though residents raised concerns about traffic and drainage along Cherry Tree Road.

In Limestone County, commissioners approved the layout of 931 lots in the Riverwalk Subdivision near major employers including Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, Amazon and Polaris.

The Commission also voted to amend the city’s alcoholic beverage ordinance to address consumable hemp products in compliance with new state law, pending City Council approval.
