The City of Huntsville has retained its perfect credit ratings from Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s Rating Services, earning Aaa and AAA ratings, respectively.
City Maintains Financial Strength
Officials say these ratings reflect Huntsville’s strong financial management, conservative budgeting practices, and a robust local economy attracting historic investments.
Factors Behind the Ratings
Rating agencies highlighted major economic drivers, including Eli Lilly and Company’s $6 billion investment announced in December, the FBI training facility’s $2 billion economic impact, and the U.S. Space Command relocation. These developments reinforce Huntsville’s position as a leader in defense, aerospace, and high-tech industries.
New Debt Issuance and Projects
Last week, Huntsville issued four series of debt. Two are new issuances: $75.4 million for Huntsville City Schools and $77.9 million for the City. Two are refunding series to refinance existing debt, providing $3.7 million in savings for schools and $2.59 million for the City over the remaining life of the warrants.
Funds from the new debt will support expansion and renovation projects, including the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum, the Huntsville Ice Sports Center, Big Spring Park, and the North Alabama Drug Task Force building operated by the Huntsville Police Department.
Mayor Tommy Battle said, “We are proud to maintain our elite credit ratings, which demonstrate that the City is a careful steward of taxpayer money. We are also grateful for the private investments made in Huntsville that not only provide jobs but contribute to the quality of life for all residents.”
