One of Huntsville’s most recognizable public spaces is getting even bigger.
According to online reports, the City of Huntsville is expanding Big Spring Park by approximately 2.4 acres, adding new gathering spaces, recreational features, and improved pedestrian access in downtown.
New amenities planned for the expanded park
The expansion will transform the former City Hall site between Church Street and Fountain Circle into additional park space.
According to online reports, the project will include terraced plazas for gathering, a central pavilion with a green roof for community events, a children’s playground, public art installations, and a water feature designed to help reduce downtown noise.
The city also plans to add new landscaping, shade trees, rain gardens, irrigation, and upgraded lighting throughout the expanded area.
Improved access and downtown connections
The project also focuses on making the park more accessible and easier to navigate. According to online reports, plans include new sidewalks connecting to Church Street, improved ADA access through a gently winding pathway, a new crosswalk linking the expanded park, and a tree-lined median along Church Street.
These improvements are expected to strengthen connections between Big Spring Park and the surrounding downtown area while creating more space for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Expansion expected to finish in 2026
City leaders say the expansion will help meet the growing demand for public gathering spaces as downtown Huntsville continues to grow.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, giving residents and visitors an even larger destination for festivals, events, recreation, and everyday enjoyment in the heart of the city.
