Curbside recycling service in Athens has been suspended until further notice.
Equipment Failure Halts Recycling Service
The City of Athens announced the suspension after the City of Decatur reported equipment failures at its recycling facility. Decatur processes recycling for Athens, so the issue has temporarily stopped curbside collection.
City Sanitation Superintendent Terence Brown said officials contacted the City of Florence to see if it could accept Athens’ recyclable materials. However, Florence cannot currently handle the additional recycling volume.
Options for Athens Residents
While the suspension remains in place, residents may place recycling bins out for regular trash pickup if needed. In addition, residents can check with the Limestone County Recycling Center on North Jefferson Street to see if drop-off recycling is available.
City officials say they will provide updates as more information becomes available. Recycling is not included as a separate charge on sanitation bills, but the city offers the service to reduce landfill waste and lower disposal costs.
