The expansion of Big Spring Park East on the former Huntsville City Hall site has taken a major step forward.
Construction Contract Approved
The City of Huntsville has awarded a construction contract to Fite Construction Company to redevelop the former City Hall property at 308 Fountain Circle into a new public greenspace connected to Big Spring Park East.
Fite Construction submitted the lowest bid at $12.48 million and will have 400 days to complete the project. City officials say the bid came in nearly $2 million below the approved budget, reflecting careful planning and cost control.
Mayor Tommy Battle said the contract approval marks meaningful progress toward the City’s long-term park expansion goals.
“This project reflects our commitment to smart growth, thoughtful design, and fiscal responsibility,” Mayor Battle said in a statement. “We’re expanding one of Huntsville’s most valued public spaces while adding amenities for residents and visitors.”
New Features Planned for the Park
The Big Spring Park East expansion will include a variety of features designed to support recreation, accessibility, and community gatherings. Planned improvements include:
A pavilion with an integrated water feature
Public restroom facilities
A rustic-style playground
ADA-accessible walking paths throughout the site
Public art installations in partnership with ArtsHuntsville
In addition, the project includes pedestrian-focused streetscape upgrades along Church Street and repairs to the canal wall to improve long-term safety and stability.
What Residents Can Expect Next
The park design was developed by Bostick Landscape Architects in collaboration with Nola VanPeursem and emphasizes accessibility, visual appeal, and improved pedestrian connections between Big Spring Park East and West.
Construction is expected to begin within the next two weeks, following final contract execution and pre-construction coordination. Once completed, the expansion will provide new gathering spaces and recreational opportunities in the heart of downtown Huntsville.
