Applications are now open for the City of Huntsville’s Civic Engagement Academy (CEA) spring 2026 cohort.
Inside Look at Huntsville City Government
The City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs hosts the Civic Engagement Academy as a free program for residents. The academy gives participants a behind-the-scenes look at how local government operates. In addition, it connects residents with City leaders, department heads, and neighbors who share an interest in civic life.
Dr. Randy Barbour, Director of Multicultural Affairs, said the program helps residents better understand how the City works while building lasting connections. He added that CEA equips participants with tools to become informed and active community members.
A Program That Inspires Participation
Many CEA graduates describe the experience as transformative. Carol Gentz, a graduate of the spring 2023 cohort and now a Program Projects Manager in the City’s Community Development Department, said the academy influenced her career path.
She noted that meeting City department heads in a relaxed setting made local government feel more approachable. As a result, the experience sparked her interest in working for the City of Huntsville.
Program Schedule and How to Apply
The spring 2026 session begins Tuesday, March 10, and meets weekly from 6 to 8 p.m. through April 28. Each session focuses on a different topic, including city growth, public safety, community resources, and civic engagement. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony.
