The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division is offering its free Boating Basics and License Courses this season. These hands-on classes give residents the opportunity to engage with ALEA Marine Patrol Troopers and learn essential boating safety information for Alabama’s waterways.

Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate by mail, which is submitted to the Agency’s Driver License Division. Once processed, individuals can add the vessel class to their Alabama Driver License. It may take up to 10 business days to access the updated license online or in person at the local county probate office.
Age and Fee Requirements
Children 12 and older can obtain a vessel operator’s license, but those under 14 must have supervision while operating a vessel. A one-time $5 cash application fee is required, along with a $36.25 issuance fee for the license.
