Alabama launches first regional high school musical theatre awards

High school performers in Alabama will soon have a chance to take their musical theatre skills to a national stage.

The Broadway Theatre League of Huntsville is introducing the state’s first Regional High School Musical Theatre Awards Program, named the Tallulah Awards, for the 2025-2026 school year.

Winners to represent Alabama at the Jimmy Awards

Two students from the state will earn the opportunity to compete at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards®, also known as the Jimmy Awards®, in New York City in June 2026. All participating schools will perform during the Tallulah Awards ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Von Braun Center Concert Hall.

Expanding opportunities for young performers

The Broadway Theatre League has a long history of supporting theatre education in North Alabama. Its Student Outreach Program began in 2005, offering free performances for local schoolchildren. Since 2016, BTL has also provided workshops led by touring Broadway performers. The new awards program represents the next step in offering regional students more advanced opportunities to develop their talent and gain recognition.

Celebrating Tallulah Bankhead

The awards are named in honor of Tallulah Bankhead, the Huntsville-born actress who became a celebrated stage and screen performer in the 20th century. Bankhead’s career included Broadway, film, radio, and television, making her a fitting role model for aspiring young actors.
