Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art science building that will significantly enhance the university’s STEM infrastructure.
Board of Trustees Approves Construction
University officials have confirmed that the Alabama A&M University Board of Trustees has approved the construction of the new science building during their most recent meeting. The $82 million project will nearly triple AAMU’s instructional classroom and laboratory STEM capacity in key fields such as biology, chemistry, and physics.
Location of the New Facility
The new science building will be strategically located near the corner of Chase Road and Meridian Street, offering convenient access for students and faculty.
A Major Investment in Student Learning and Research
“Our new Science Building will be an added bonus for our students, allowing them to conduct cutting-edge experiments and pioneering research as they prepare for graduate or professional school or enter the workforce,” said AAMU President Daniel Wims. “This building will enhance the transformation of our campus, and our Board is to be commended for their continued support in creating a conducive learning environment for our students.”

The new building is expected to feature advanced laboratories, collaborative research spaces, and modernized classrooms. Dr. Zhengtao Deng, Dean of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Physical Sciences, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “This new facility will significantly enhance our capacity to provide top-tier STEM education to our students.”

University Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences, Dr. Jeanette Jones, highlighted the broader impact of the investment: “This transformative investment will not only allow our faculty to be even more scientifically competitive, but it confirms that our students will have access to cutting-edge laboratories and research facilities, giving them a greater advantage for internships and employment.”
Student Involvement in the Project
Before construction begins later this year, AAMU plans to involve students in finalizing the building’s features and amenities. The university leads the state in producing minority STEM graduates and is committed to furthering student success with this major new addition to its campus.
