Alabama State Senator Tom Butler, a longtime representative of Madison County, will step down after over four decades in the Legislature. He plans to officially announce his retirement on Tuesday.
A career spanning the house and senate
Butler began his public service in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1982. In 1994, he moved to the State Senate, where he served until 2010. After several years away, he returned to the Senate in 2018. He currently represents parts of Madison and Limestone counties and is now in his fourth Senate term.
Throughout his career, Butler has earned a reputation for consistent leadership and broad legislative experience.
Leadership roles and legislative impact
Currently, Butler chairs the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. He also serves on several high-impact committees, including Finance and Taxation, Health Care, Transportation and Energy, and Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development. Additionally, he acts as Vice Chairman of the Madison County Senate Delegation.
Thanks to these roles, Butler has had direct influence over state policy in critical areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and budgeting.
Investment in community projects
One of Butler’s most visible recent contributions involves the Saturn IB rocket project at the Alabama Welcome Center in Ardmore. He helped secure $7 million in state funding for a full-scale replica to replace the deteriorated original.
Design and proposal planning for the replica is already underway. Butler called the rocket a “positive symbol” of Alabama’s history and innovation.
Closing a chapter in public service
Before entering politics, Butler worked as a pharmacist. His medical background has informed his contributions to healthcare legislation over the years.
Although he is retiring, Butler’s legacy will continue through the policies he helped shape and the projects he championed. His long-standing commitment to public service has left a lasting mark on North Alabama.
