Huntsville officials celebrated the opening of a new Memorial Parkway overpass on October 16, marking a major step in a $34 million project aimed at reducing congestion on the city’s north side.
New overpass aims to ease traffic congestion
Local and state officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the milestone. The overpass is a central part of efforts to extend the Memorial Parkway expressway and improve travel near Mastin Lake Road.
The project is expected to help drivers move through the area more efficiently, particularly during busy periods. Officials also pointed to the improvements as a benefit for residents traveling around Huntsville and people entering or leaving the city.
Work continues at Mastin Lake Road
The overpass opened to northbound traffic in mid-September. Since then, construction crews have continued paving and installing lighting, signs and road markings for the southbound side.
Mastin Lake Road remains temporarily closed to through traffic beneath the overpass, and left turns at the intersection are currently restricted. The Alabama Department of Transportation expects the intersection to reopen later in October with new U-turn lanes.
Drivers should remain alert for temporary lane closures and uneven pavement where the main road, ramps and frontage roads meet. ALDOT advises motorists to slow down and use caution while construction continues.
Project marks a major infrastructure investment
The overpass project has taken approximately two years to build, bringing some temporary disruptions for nearby residents and drivers. Huntsville City Council Member Michelle Watkins described the opening as an important investment in local infrastructure.
The improvements are also arriving ahead of Alabama A&M University’s homecoming, a period when traffic in the surrounding area typically increases. Once the remaining work is complete, the project is expected to provide a smoother route through this part of north Huntsville.
