Huntsville has been awarded $10.8 million in federal funding to help advance the first phase of the Resolute Way interchange project along Interstate 565.
Resolute Way will connect I-565 to Redstone Arsenal
The planned roadway will create a new connection between I-565 and Gate 9 at Redstone Arsenal, helping improve access to the installation and reduce congestion in the area.
More than 100,000 vehicles travel through the surrounding I-565 corridor each day, including the areas near Madison Boulevard and Research Park Boulevard. City officials estimate the full interchange project will cost about $60 million.
Grant will support the next phase
The funding comes through the Defense Community Infrastructure Program, which provides federal support for infrastructure projects that benefit communities surrounding military installations.
The first phase includes about two miles of roadway improvements between I-565 and Redstone Gateway. The federal grant will also help the city move forward with the project’s second phase.
That phase would include a connector bridge across I-565 and changes around Exit 13 and Governors West. The improvements are planned to provide better connections toward Research Park, Bridge Street and Madison Boulevard.
Project aims to improve traffic flow
Resolute Way has been identified as a major transportation priority for Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal. The city says the project will improve traffic movement around the Arsenal and along the busy I-565 corridor.
Earlier this year, the Huntsville City Council approved an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation providing $11.5 million for the project. That funding includes $2.3 million from the city, with the remainder coming through the Huntsville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.
The new federal grant adds another source of funding as Huntsville works to advance the interchange project and improve transportation infrastructure around Redstone Arsenal.
