Huntsville Airport reopens east runway after $12.3M upgrade

Huntsville International Airport has reopened a major runway following a multimillion-dollar upgrade, according to online reports.

$12.3M Runway Project Completed

Airport officials announced the reopening of the East Runway after a $12.3 million rehabilitation project. Crews spent about 14 months upgrading the runway and key connector areas.

The project received funding through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, contractors resurfaced the runway and improved surrounding infrastructure.

This marks the first major rehabilitation of the runway since 2009. As a result, the airport can continue to meet growing demand.

Upgrades Improve Safety and Capacity

The project included repaving, shoulder improvements, and new LED lighting. These upgrades improve both safety and efficiency for daily operations.

The 10,000-foot runway can handle some of the world’s largest aircraft. For example, it supports cargo planes like the Boeing 747-8 Freighter and the Antonov An-124.

Therefore, the improvements strengthen Huntsville’s role as a logistics hub. Airport leaders say the upgrades also support commercial, military, and general aviation traffic.

Supporting Growth and Future Expansion

Airport officials say strong infrastructure helps keep Huntsville competitive. In recent years, passenger traffic has continued to grow, setting new records.

In addition, the airport serves multiple major airlines and offers nonstop destinations across the country. As demand rises, leaders expect continued investment in facilities and services.

Looking ahead, officials are also exploring future opportunities. For example, the airport holds approval to support landings for the Dream Chaser, a commercial space vehicle.

As a result, the runway upgrades position Huntsville for both current growth and future innovation in aviation.
