According to online reports, Back Forty Beer Company has modified its plans for a large outdoor amphitheater behind its Huntsville location following news of another mid-sized venue project in development.
Original $5 Million Amphitheater Plan on Hold
Back Forty had been exploring a $5 million project to build a 3,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater comparable to Avondale Brewing Company’s venue in Birmingham. The proposed site sits just northwest of the brewery at 3254 Leeman Ferry Drive, near John Hunt Park. Site preparation is currently underway, with landscaping expected to follow in spring 2026.
City-Backed Venue Group Announces Competing Project
In early August, The Venue Group (tvg) — the city’s contracted operator for the Orion Amphitheater — announced plans to identify locations for a new indoor venue in the 2,500- to 3,000-capacity range. Following that announcement, Back Forty representatives said the company decided to pause construction on stage, concession, and seating infrastructure until tvg’s plans are finalized.
Interim Use for Events and Concerts
Until a final decision is made, Back Forty intends to use the space as a flexible outdoor area for concerts, corporate functions, and community events. The brewery plans to host performances with a portable stage and temporary tents for concessions, targeting a May launch.
Back Forty’s Huntsville location has previously hosted local and touring acts, including events in partnership with Big Spring Entertainment. The addition of a mid-sized venue, whether developed by Back Forty or tvg, would fill a gap between existing local music venues such as Mars Music Hall and the Orion Amphitheater.
