Huntsville’s population grows rapidly while other Alabama cities decline

The Rocket City attracted an average of 11 new residents every day in 2024, further expanding the population lead over Alabama’s other major urban centers.

Population Growth Outpaces Statewide Cities

The latest figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday highlight that Alabama’s largest city experienced the highest population increase in the state last year. This surge reflects a trend of steady growth not seen since 2020.

Leadership Credits Strategic Planning and Investments

Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized that this expansion is the result of prudent fiscal management and targeted investments. He stated, “Our community draws people in with a robust job market, strong educational institutions, safe living areas, and numerous opportunities to succeed. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to making Huntsville an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Economic Development Driving Population Gains

Huntsville’s population rose by nearly 4,200 last year, pushing the estimated total above 230,000 — an increase of roughly 15,000 residents since 2020, according to analysis by AL.com. Meanwhile, other large cities in Alabama, including Birmingham, Mobile, and Montgomery, saw declines in their populations last year, losing thousands since 2020.

The region’s growth is supported by rising income levels and housing values in North Alabama, fueled by significant investments in space, defense, and manufacturing industries, as well as growth at Redstone Arsenal.

Lucia Cape, senior vice president of economic development and workforce for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, noted that the area’s expanding economy and focused efforts to attract skilled workers are key factors behind the population increase. She added, “Our campaigns through ASmartPlace.com and national recognition of the area’s quality of life and affordability are drawing attention from across the country. As more jobs and investments come in, we continue to attract people seeking better opportunities.”
